The influence of two important features of magnesium diboride on the macroscopic transport properties of polycrystalline MgB2 is discussed in the framework of a percolation model. While two band superconductivity does not have significant consequences in the field and temperature range of possible power applications, the opposite is true for the anisotropy of the upper critical field. The field dependence of the critical current densities strongly increases and the macroscopic supercurrents disappear well below the apparent upper critical field. The common scaling laws for the field dependence of the volume pinning force are altered and Kramer’s plot is no longer linear, although grain boundary pinning dominates in nearly all polycrystalline MgB2 conductors. In contrast to the conventional superconductors NbTi and Nb3Sn, a significant critical current anisotropy can be induced by the preparation technique of MgB2 tapes. 2009 Elsevier B.V. Anisotropy of the critical current in MgB2 tapes made of high energy milled precursor powder

For applications of MgB2 wires or tapes, high critical currents in high magnetic fields are essential. By using tapes in superconducting coils the anisotropic behaviour of the critical current, i.e. the dependence on the direction of the external field in relation to the tape surface, has to be taken into account. The anisotropy of MgB2 tapes with mechanically alloyed (MA) precursor powder and ...

The influence of weak texture on the critical currents in polycrystalline MgB2

The current transport in polycrystalline MgB2 is strongly influenced by the intrinsic anisotropy of this superconductor. Untextured bulks and wires are macroscopically isotropic, but the grains retain their anisotropic properties and the field dependence of the critical currents is much stronger than in isotropic superconductors. Weakly or partially textured tapes are macroscopically anisotropi...

The Effect of Dynamic Permeability on Velocity and Intrinsic Attenuation of Compressional Waves in Sand

Stress waves contain useful information about the properties of porous materials; they can be recovered through different non-destructive testing methods such as crosswell, vertical seismic profile, borehole logging as well as sonic tests. In all these methods, it is crucial to assess the effects of frequency on wave attributes including velocity and intrinsic attenuation. The dependency of per...

A “v2-f Based” Macroscopic K-Ε Model for Turbulent Flow through Porous Media

In this paper a new macroscopic k-ε model is developed and validated for turbulent flow through porous media for a wide range of porosities. The morphology of porous media is simulated by a periodic array of square cylinders. In the first step, calculations based on microscopic v2 − f model are conducted using a Galerkin/Least-Squares finite element formulation, employing equalorder bilinear ve...

Effects of resveratrol on intrinsic neuronal properties of CA1 pyramidal neurons in rat hippocampal slices

Introduction: Resveratrol (3,5,4-trihydroxystilbene) a non-flavonoid polyphenol found in some plants like grapes, peanuts and pomegranates, possesses a wide range of biological effects. Evidence indicates that resveratrol has beneficial effects on nervous system to induce neuroprotection. However, the cellular mechanisms of the effects are not fully determined. In the present study, the cellula...
